| If God said to you I will
give you whatever you want, what would your one request be? This question may seem farfetched but it did actually happen once. God said to Solomon “Ask for whatever you
want me to give you.” Solomon asked for “A discerning heart to govern…and to distinguish between right and wrong.” 3 Kings 3:9 In other words Solomon asked for wisdom. Is that what you were thinking of asking God for, wisdom? Solomon was not asking for more knowledge or more common sense. He was asking for wisdom. Why do you think Solomon asked for wisdom? Wisdom is the ability to make wise decisions in difficult circumstances so we don’t have to grope around in the darkness, hoping to stumble upon answers. Wisdom means practical discernment. There are two kinds of wisdom: worldly and spiritual Worldly wisdom involves applying knowledge and human understanding to certain factual situations. This type of wisdom can usually be explained in the context of benefits and detriments. Example, it is not wise to insult your boss. Worldly wisdom teaches us that what we perceive to be trials and misfortunes are to be avoided. Spiritual wisdom doesn’t rely on human understanding. Spiritual wisdom refers to a belief system that can be comprehended only through spiritual insight. Example, those who do not know God cannot understand how it is possible to sense God’s direction. Spiritual wisdom grants to those who suffer, the ability to make sense of life’s injustices and difficulties and still trust in God. “If any of you lacks
wisdom, No matter where you look today, there’s opportunity. Opportunities are calling out from the billboard, the television screen, the Internet. Get rich, save money, free etc. We don’t need more opportunities. What we need is wisdom to sort through the opportunities we already have. Wisdom leads to good judgment “Getting wisdom is the mostimportant thing you can do” Prov 4:7 God is willing to give us wisdom, but we will be unable to receive it if our goals are self-centered instead of God-centered. God gives wisdom but not for drifting through life acting irresponsibly with His gifts and resources. Pride and greed keep us from God’s wisdom. Wisdom is a God given gift and it results from an energetic search. Wisdom’s starting point is God and His revealed Word, the source of knowledge and understanding. Proverbs 2:6 “For the Lord gives wisdom, from His mouth come knowledge and understanding.” Wisdom begins with respect for God. It leads to right living. It results in increased ability to tell right from wrong. How do you gain wisdom? Trust and honor God Realization that the Bible reveals God’s wisdom Right choices and avoiding moral pitfalls Learning from our errors “If any of you lacks
wisdom, If you have ever prayed the Prayer of Serenity, you have already asked God for wisdom. “God, give me the
courage to change the things I can, The wisdom of God allows us to understand trials, and it drives us to perceive our responsibility to one another. Example: Maria Skobtsova was a prisoner at the Nazi concentration camp called Ravensbruck. In the midst of this unimaginable horror, it would have been easy and even normal for her to despair. Yet the wisdom of God granted to her the ability to see her situation not as misfortune, but ad opportunity. She wrote: “I am Thy message, Lord. Throw me, like a blazing torch into the night, so that all may see and understand what it means to be Thy disciple.” We need wisdom to know how to cope with trials, for wisdom provides a clear view of our situation from God’s perspective. With wisdom we perceive that what the world calls misfortune, whatever its source, is an opportunity for God to bring about His purpose. “If any of you lacks
wisdom,
