Jr. Youth Group

The Jr. Youth Group ended 2001 with a bang! In November, they raked leaves for four of St. Paul’s senior members.  They worked hard and did a great job!  They also learned more about “Giving Thanks” at their Thanksgiving meeting.

In December, the youths participated in the Church Clean-up - once again raking lots of leaves and hauling them to the back! They also made the faces of the shut-ins smile during the Christmas caroling!

We are pleased to announce that the Jr. Youth Group will be sponsoring a child from the Phillipines.  His name is Allan Jay Framil, 6 years old.   Each meeting, the youths are encouraged to bring an offering for Allan.  We will be writing to him every couple months and eagerly awaiting his response.

Some upcoming events will be: serving at Elijah’s Promise Soup Kitchen, bake sale, car wash, visit to Parker Nursing Home, visits to shut-ins, and possibly an interactive scavenger hunt with the Sr. Youth Group.   Any suggestions and/or assistance is always welcome! Happy New Year!!

Tentative January meeting dates will be Sunday, January 6 and 20. Times and events to be determined.

Martha Circle

The Martha Circle met on Monday evening, December 17th in the Social Hall.  Our leader, Ruth Karren, opened the meeting with a prayer.  Devotions were led by Marjorie Conger - there was a reading titled “The Innkeeper’s Lament” - this is a story revealing the innkeepers’ feelings and thoughts when he “had no place in the inn”.  She also read two thought-provoking messages entitled “Ways We Are Different This Christmas” and “Jesus Is Better Than Santa Claus”.

The Guild Treasurer, Grace Novello, gave a financial report on the success of the Bakeless Cake Sale and the Cookie Walk. Arlene Kuhlthau reported that the holiday tray favors were given to the Milltown and North Brunswick Senior Centers to be given to the Meals-on-Wheels shut-ins. Marjorie Conger reported that eighty-three gift packages (and other miscellaneous items) were given to the Roosevelt Care Center. Doris Weber reported that seventeen fruit baskets were distributed to the shut-ins.  The Guild expressed their appreciation to Sally Hettler for making the afghans that were also given to the shut-ins.  In lieu of a grab bag gift, members donated $100.00 to the Needy Cases Fund.

There was a suggestion by Marjorie Conger regarding changing the name of our Circle to just a single name instead of Martha/Esther Circle.  After discussion, Grace Novello made a motion that we just use the name “Martha Circle”. Motion seconded by Marjorie and unanimously approved by all members present.

There will be no Circle meeting in January.  The next meeting will be held on Monday evening, February 18 at 7:30 p.m., in the Social Hall.  Marie Rittman will have devotions and Doris Weber will have refreshments.

Marjorie Conger,
Secretary

Men of St. Paul’s

Wow, we finally had some new faces at the December meeting of the Men’s Group.  Welcome gentlemen!  We enjoyed fellowship and a wonderful ham dinner prepared by Dot Madell. Thank you Dot.

After dinner, President Dennis Lowe, or rather half of him, (as now Dennis appears to be only half the man he once was) led us in a very brief business meeting.  We updated him on how we planned to spend some of the money from the Roast Pork Dinner.  Next we discussed the proposed Men’s Group calendar set up by Pastor Rich.  It looks good to me, but if you haven’t seen it, get a copy and judge for yourself.

Next, we put on some Christmas music, thanks to the efforts of Greg Jones (a new guy??) and helped the youth group make up their wreaths.

The next meeting will be on January 7th at 6:30 p.m.  After dinner, Steve Napolitano - supervisor at the GW bridge - will share what it’s been like working there since September 11 and the importance of faith in that environment.  Jeff Conger already said he has a lot of questions for him.  So mark your calendars, based on last night, this promises to be an entertaining evening.

Respectfully submitted,
Jack Perry

Sarah Circle

Sarah Circle met on Monday, December 17, with eleven members present.  The ladies served a variety of cookies for refreshments.  Chris discussed the $10.00 donation to the Salvation Army that is given each month.  It was decided to continue with that.

There will be no meeting in January.

The next meeting will be on February 18 at 12:30 p.m. in the Social Hall.
