Happy New Year

What would you say is the greatest challenge facing St. Paul’s in 2003?

Completing the restoration work?

Being financially solvent?  Deciding if children should receive communion?

Growing our praise service?

An article in Discipleship Journal stated the greatest challenge facing St. Paul’s and all churches is ‘getting the church on its knees’.   In other words, making the church what Jesus said,

“My house shall be a house of prayer.”

What did Jesus mean by this statement?

Do opening meetings with prayer, having a pastoral prayer in worship, and holding special prayer meetings fit Jesus’ description of the church,

“My house shall be a house of prayer.”

Recognizing prayer as a ministry of the church much like youth or music ministry that involves a certain number of people who have a burden for prayer, does this meet Jesus’ criteria,

“My house shall be a house of prayer.”

Believing that prayer needs to permeate every ministry of the church, that every ministry must be prayed for, and prayer must be a significant part of each ministry, and that virtually everyone in the church is involved in prayer, would this meet Jesus’ requirements,

“My house shall be a house of prayer.”

Which of these descriptions do you think Jesus had in mind when he said,

“My house shall be a house of prayer.”

Fred A. Hartley III compared the characteristics of a church that prays and a church devoted to prayer.

A church that prays:

1. Prays about what it does.

2. Fits prayer in.

3. Prays when there are problems.

4. Announces a special time of prayer – some in the church ....show up.

5. Asks God to bless what it is doing.

6. Is frustrated by financial shortfall – backs down from ....projects.

7. Is tired, weary, stressed out.

8. Does things within its means.

9. Sees its members as its parish

10. Is involved in the work of man.

A church devoted to prayer:

1. Does things by prayer.

2. Gives prayer priority.

3. Prays when there are opportunities

4. Announces a special time of prayer – the entire church shows ....up.

5. Asks God to enable it to do what He is blessing.

6. Is challenged by financial shortfalls – calls for fasting, prayer, ....and faith.

7. Mounts up with wings like eagles, runs and does not faint.

8. Does things beyond its means.

9. Sees the world as its parish.

10. Is involved in the work of God.

Based on these characteristics would you say St. Paul’s is a church that prays or a church devoted to prayer?  Is our church a

“house of prayer”?

May God’s “grace of prayer” fall upon us.

Contemporary Service

Why should a traditional church be interested in
developing a Contemporary Service?

1. God has called the church to add a contemporary service.

2. This is an opportunity to broaden our outreach eeffectiveness.

3. This is an opportunity to develop younger worship leadership.

4. This is an opportunity to develop disciples in a culturally relevant environment.

Over the course of the next several months we will be researching and defining what is a contemporary service.

Pastor and Emilia are seeking your help in developing a contemporary service.

Please speak to them concerning how you can help. The office phone number is 732.828.0020.

In the mean time:

The WEEKLY Sunday night Praise Service
