.January 2004

Dear Family and Friends,

It is that time of year, when we make our resolutions for 2004. It is that time of year when we reflect on 2003 and resolve that 2004 will be better. It is that time of year when we promise to take ‘the bull by its horns’ and take control of our life.

Too often the resolutions we make are similar to resolutions we made last year at this time. This year we mean it. 2004 it is going to be different. We have a strong sense of confidence and self-determination.

To everyone who is determined to keep their resolutions I wish you God’s strength and I offer you God’s Word that says,

“I can do all things through Christ
who strengthens me.”

I also want to challenge you to examine your resolutions. Are your resolutions ‘all about you?’

While making resolutions to improve ones health, appearance, financial security, job satisfaction, relationships, etc. are all admirable.  Each resolution usually revolves around self and self-improvement.

May I ask where does God fit in your resolutions?  Aside from asking God to help you keep your resolutions, have you ever consulted God for help in making your resolutions?

This indeed would eliminate some speculation about what sort of resolutions you should make. Rick Warren in his book, The Purpose Driven Life reminds readers that there is an alternative to speculation about the meaning and purpose of life. “It’s revelation.” By turning to the Word of God, you and I can learn what God has revealed about the purpose of life.

Can you think of a better place to learn about the purpose of life than from the creator Himself?  As Rick Warren notes, “The easiest way to discover the purpose of any invention is to consult the creator. The same is true for discovering your life’s purpose: ask God.”

May these thoughts encourage and influence you with regards to your resolutions for 2004.

May you resolve that every day in 2004 you will remind yourself that life is really about living for God and not yourself.

This means daily acknowledging that the purpose of your life is far greater than your personal fulfillment, your own peace of mind or even your own happiness.

This means daily acknowledging that the purpose of your life is greater than your family, your career and even your wildest dreams and ambitions.

This means daily acknowledging that the purpose of your life is found in God and God alone.

Happy New Year
