February 2002

Greetings,

A schoolteacher asked the class to name the Seven Wonders of the World.  After much discussion and some disagreement the class compiled the following list.

1. Egypt's Great Pyramids
2. Taj Mahal
3. Grand Canyon
4. Panama Canal
5. Empire State Building
6. St. Peter's Basilica
7. China's Great Wall

The teacher noted that one student was very quiet and in fact she did not participate in the class discussion.  So she asked the girl if she had trouble with her list.

The girl replied, "Yes, I can’t make up my mind because there were so many."

The teacher said, "Well, tell us what you have and maybe we can help."   The girl hesitated, then read, "I think the Seven Wonders of the World are:"

1. to touch
2. to taste
3. to see
4. to hear
5. to feel
6. to laugh
7. and to love

The room was so full of silence you could have heard a pin drop.

Those things we overlook as "simple" and "ordinary" are truly wondrous.   A gentle reminder that the most precious things in life cannot be bought.

Lent is a gentle reminder that the most precious gifts of forgiveness and salvation cannot be bought.  These precious gifts are free.  To receive them all you have to do is believe in the Lord Jesus Christ.

Unfortunately like the precious gifts of taste, touch, sight, hearing, feeling, laughing and loving we overlook the gifts of forgiveness and salvation.

Lent is a time when you and I can renew our love, our commitment, and our appreciation to God for the precious gift of His Son who offers us salvation.

This is the Greatest Wonder in the History of the World.

Prayerfully yours in Christ,

What is a Sabbath?

A. A tedious day full of rules about what we can’t do

B. A day to rest and grow closer to God

C. A protected time to realize and enjoy our identity as people created by God

D. A 24 hour period in which we relinquish our focus on doing

If you answered B, C, or D you were closer to a correct understanding of the Sabbath.

I don’t think any believer intends to reject God’s gifts. Yet many of us have done that with the Sabbath

Decide to have a Sabbath. This is the first and hardest step. Make a commitment to God to enjoy His gift.

Mid Week Worship

Lenten mid week worship will begin on Ash Wednesday, February 13th at 7:30 p.m.  This service is a joint service with the Methodist church here at St. Paul’s.

Wednesday night worship will continue through Lent.  The theme of the Lenten Services is the words of Jesus,

If these children were silent,
the stones would shout.”

Each service will consider a Biblical reference to stones and what lesson you can learn from them.
