February 2008
GREETINGS,

Given a chance to have anything in the world, what would you choose?

When King Solomon was asked this question by God Solomon asked for wisdom – a discerning heart. (1Kings 3:6-9). Jesus’ brother James wrote, “If any of you lack wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.” (James 1:5). Henry Emerson Fosdich, the author of the hymn, God of Grace and God of Glory, included in every verse the petition “Grant us wisdom; Grant us courage”. After each petition he gives reasons for his request. Vs. 1 For the facing of this hour. Vs. 2 For the living of these days. Vs. 3 Lest we miss Thy kingdom’s goal. Vs. 4 That we fail not man nor Thee.

The footnote to James 1:5 in the life application Bible reads, “By Wisdom James is talking not only about knowledge, but the ability to make wise decisions in difficult circumstance. Whenever we need wisdom we can pray to God, and He will generously supply what we need. We don’t have to grope around in the dark, hoping to stumble upon answers. We can ask for God’s wisdom to guide our choices.

Wisdom begins with respect for God, leads to living by God’s directions and results in the ability to tell right from wrong. Asking for wisdom is ultimately asking to be like Christ.”

Unfortunately many of us attempt to live our lives like we drive. We think we know how to get somewhere and should we get lost we don’t ask for directions. Had we consulted a map or “mapquest” before we left, we would have greatly reduced our chances of getting lost.

To gain wisdom we MUST break our habit of being BUSY. (BUSY is an acronym for Being Under Satan’s Yoke) We MUST spend time with God and in God’s Word.

My challenge to you for this season of Lent which starts February 6th, is to spend time gaining wisdom by learning what Christ is like. A 40 days of Lent daily scripture reading list is enclosed in this Tidings, to help you gain insight and wisdom for the living of these days.

May God grant you wisdom.
