April 2002
Greetings,
A Whisper or a Brick?
This was the subject matter of an
e-mail I received recently. If it wasn’t from someone I know, I
would not have opened it.
After I read it, I was glad I did. I hope you feel the same
way after you read the following story.
A young and successful executive was speeding down a neighborhood
street, when suddenly a brick smashed the door of his Jaguar.
He slammed on his brakes, jumped from his Jag and grabbed the child
who threw the brick.
“What do you think you are doing? This is a brand new car.
That brick you threw is going to cost a lot of money. What were you
thinking? Why did you do it?” demanded the young
executive.
“Please sir, please. I’m sorry, I didn’t know what else to do,”
pleaded the youngster. “I threw the brick because no one would
stop.”
Tears were dripping down the boy’s chin as he pointed to the other
side of the parked car. “It’s my brother,” he said. “He rolled
off the curb and fell out of his wheel chair and I can’t lift him
up.” Sobbing, the boy asked the executive, “Would you please
help me get him back into his wheelchair, sir?
The young executive moved beyond words and fighting back tears
lifted the young man back into his wheelchair. He took out his
handkerchief and wiped the scrapes and cuts. He checked further to
make sure that the boy was ok.
“Thank you and God bless you, sir,” the grateful child said to him.
The man watched the little boy push his brother toward home.
He returned to his Jag and never did repair the side door of his
Jag. He decide he would keep it as a reminder not to go
through life so fast that someone has to throw a brick at him to get
his attention.
Is someone trying to get your attention? God? Your
spouse? Your child? Your friend? Your parent?
Are you speeding through life so in order to get your attention they
are going to have to throw a brick at you?
God would rather whisper in your soul or speak to your heart BUT if
God has to He will use a brick.
It is your choice. Listen to His whisper or wait for the
brick.
