May 2003

Greetings,

The following story is taken from Lasting Victory written by Kevin Streek, the men’s basketball coach at Calvin College.

“The year 1999-2000 was a storybook season for Calvin College men’s basketball team – 30-2 overall, undefeated in league play, and an NCAA Division III national championship.

Our team had already accomplished by mid-season many of the goals it had set for itself. As coach, therefore, I had the task of trying to help the team to reach even higher, to reset its sights, and to go for even more. At a team meeting, therefore, I gave each player a blank piece of paper and asked him to "write out his additional personal goals and to dream of what contributions he could make to the team’s further success.”

St. Paul’s is in a very similar situation as the men’s basketball team of Calvin College. We cannot be content with the ministry that we are doing but must strive to reach higher. Our challenge is a God given mandate to every ‘Body of Christ.’ “God wants us to have both a ministry in the church and a mission in the world. Our ministry is our service to believers and our mission is our service to unbelievers.” (The Purpose Driven Life, Rick Warren)

Grateful for everything that you are doing or have done to help the church fulfill it’s God given purpose I am asking you to prayerfully consider what contribution could you make to further the ministry and mission of St. Paul’s.

Perhaps you are wondering, what could I possibly do? Before you think of all the reasons why you couldn’t contribute more to the ministry and mission of St. Paul’s read what one player on the men’s basketball team of Calvin College wrote, “Robby, whose severe foot injury had put him on the bench for the rest of the season, wrote, ‘I will be a better encourager to my teammates and be a vocal leader.’”

There are many ministries and missions of St. Paul’s that need your contribution.
