July 2000

Greetings,

Do you know how one can measure the amount of oxygen in your blood?

While visiting Esther in the hospital a nurse came in and placed a plastic clamp on her index finger.  The clamp had a red light that penetrated her finger and within a few seconds, the nurse told her, her oxygen count.

I was fascinated.  I even remarked there has to be a sermon there.  What follows is not a sermon, but a simple lesson about God.

That light which was able to read something not visible to the naked eye, is very much like the eye of God.

The eye of God is able to see through our pretenses, our masks, our disguises.  The eye of God is able to see into our heart.  God sees if our worship, our prayers, our actions are habits and deeds of self preservation. Remember what God said to the Israelites through the prophet Micah when they were offering God all kinds of sacrifices.  God saw through those sacrifices.  He saw that they were only trying to appease Him.

The prophet Micah spoke the Word of the Lord to them,

"And what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with our God.  Micah 6:8

The Eye of God is able to penetrate our thick skin and hardened heart.  The Eye of God sees who we are.  The Eye of God often beams with pride and often fills up with tears because of what He sees in our hearts.

As fascinated as I was by the technology of humanity,  I know it pales in comparison to the abilities of God.  It reminded me that the light of God’s Word and God’s Spirit shine into our hearts and lives.

When God shines that light in your life, what does he see?

A vessel of love or a harbor of hate?

A receptacle of thanksgiving or a hamper of grudges?

A channel of justice or a sewer of inequity?

A seat of passion for Him or for self?

A life being transformed by His Word or conformed by this world?

You, determine what God sees.

In Christ,
